The Receipts: What This Actually Produced
I’ve spent five posts making promises. Fair enough to ask the question my accountant asks right before he ruins a nice mood: okay, what do you actually have to show for it?
Here are the receipts.
The Big One
Resistance Wine now runs on a system we built ourselves — tasting-room manager, a fully autonomous ERP, production tracking, cost accounting, CRM, and the marketing engine — handling work that would otherwise take roughly four additional full-time employees. That’s not “AI helped us.” That’s AI quietly running a real company with a tasting room, inventory, and actual wine, while the humans do the parts humans are good at.
More Receipts
More receipts, because one example is an anecdote and several is a pattern. McDrake’s core system got sped up from 974 milliseconds to 294 — the kind of number engineers high-five about and the rest of us take on faith, like the wine list. Our events app got dragged from completely broken to fully working over 11 fix cycles (AI is wonderful, but it does not get it right on the first try, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something). The expense automation processed 10 receipts totaling $2,704 with zero errors. And under all of it, the arc: an hour a day, then four, then a company restructured around the freed capacity.
The Honest Part
Now the honest part, because hype is easy and credibility is the whole game. “It works” means it works and we still babysit it — we find and fix things constantly, and that’s the job, not a confession. None of this happened by buying a magic product. It happened by getting our hands dirty, failing a lot (see: the four-fingered portrait), and building.
If you take one thing from the receipts, take this: the proof of AI in your business isn’t “we use AI.” Anyone can say that. The proof is being able to point at something and say “this runs the business now — and here’s the headcount it would’ve taken otherwise.” When you can say that, you’re not experimenting anymore. You’re operating.
Final Thoughts
Why It Matters: “We use AI” is a slogan. “This runs the business, and here’s what it replaced” is a result. Only one of them is worth anything.
What to Do: Pick one process AI now runs end-to-end and put a real number on it — hours, dollars, or headcount. That number is your proof.
Coming Up Next: Why you can’t buy your way to any of this — and the $4,000 espresso machine that explains why.
Disruption with a side of humor — Kirk Drake, signing off (until the next post).
I share the real numbers, failures included, when I speak — no vendor gloss. Book me here if your group is tired of AI hype and wants the receipts.
